Who? 30 players qualify for the Tour Championship

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick may not have been out with the BMW Championship Trophy on Sunday, but his stellar fortnight at Olympia Fields (Illinois) has had an even more significant effect: It assured him entry into the Tour Championship next week, where the FedEx Cup is on the line.

Fitzpatrick entered Week 40 in the FedEx Cup points standings and jumped to 10th with a tie for second in a BMW behind winner Viktor Hovland of Norway. Only the top 30 players after Sunday’s match advance to the season-ending Tour Championship.

Hovland, who shot 61 including a 7-under 28 for a back nine, moved from seventh to second in the standings. Scotty Scheffler – the co-leader with Fitzpatrick’s 54-hole lead – passed Spaniard John Rahm for the lead.

That means Scheffler will start Thursday at Eastlake Golf Club in Atlanta at 10 under par, with a stroke advantage over Hovland in the staggered start format.

The last man in the field of thirty was Austrian Sepp Straka, and the first man out was Sahith Thigala. Both Straka and Theegala stunned their final holes on Sunday, but it came at an even greater cost to Theegala, who started the week 31st in points and failed to pass any of his peers. Straka tied for 37th (over 2nd) in Sunday’s championship to drop from 24th to 30th in the points standings. Theegala tied for 15th on Sunday with a round of 67 and 6 short of the total.

The Ram tied for 31st in BMW, its second straight week below average to open the FedEx Cup three-week qualifying season. This dropped him from I to IV for East Lake.
